I don't really know why you'd be here. I mean, I know I'm the single most interesting person, but don't you people have lives? Really, it's quite sad.

Pictures speak louder than words

Starting with Katie's wedding...

Their audience was adorable.

The reception was really quite sad because we were the only ones to ever start clanking glasses to get them to kiss. It also took Paul and me getting out on the dance floor to get a few more couples out there. You know the rest of the crowd was pretty bad when the bride, as we left, thanked us for getting the party started.

Then we have the fun day at McConnell AFB...

Yes, Paul was the guest of the day. We're not exactly sure why, but it was funny and made his day.

Now let's see what has been happening around our house...

BECAME...

BECAME...

I just need to paint the pole.

[That's a bunch of granite along the side of the house and around the deck.]

BECOMING...

Those are some fall-planted daylilies going crazy.

Also planted at that time...

[More daylilies.]

[Hostas]

[Not sure. A volunteer something by the hostas. We'll see.]

Going inside...

BECAME...

During which we found...

Sorry if that grosses people out, but I thought it was hilarious! The mouse apparently got squished between the cupboards and old range. I was kind of wondering why Trixie was so fascinated by that small crack, and a few weeks ago I swore there was a dead mouse somewhere around the kitchen. Guess I was right. Hehe...I'm sorry, it still makes me laugh!

Finally, a little look at our area of Kansas...

We love Kansas.

Changing the rules of basketball

I'd like to know when they decided to change the rule so that the clock started as soon as the ball leaves the hands of the inbounding player, not once the ball is touched by a player on the court.

That is exactly the call that was made in the final 5 seconds of the Texas A&M game last night, where the refs watched the tape over and over and over and over and over again, then decided to take a full second off the 3.1 seconds remaining, when the ball went out of bounds off Memphis almost immediately after inital player contact. Granted, the Aggies probably still would have lost, but that just sealed the game for Memphis. The announcers were just as astonished as we were. And it irritates me mostly because I do not want to have to cheer for Kansas as the remaining Big XII team.

Dining Room: Before & After

Almost a month ago now we decided to tackle the ugliness of the dining room and turn it into a showpiece room. Paul had a 4-day weekend, so we bought a 5-gallon bucket of Kilz and a color for the room and went to work bright and early Friday morning. The two most interesting things that occurred during that weekend were 1) a Kirby vacuum salesman stopped by while we were in the middle of priming the walls and tried to sell us a vacuum, even though he knew we wouldn't buy and we just kept right on painting. It was kinda fun. He cleaned our couch and bed for us. 2) In changing the ugly dark brown lightswitches to match the lighter color of the room, we discovered that all of the electricity for the 2nd floor was running through one of said switches. It was at that point that Paul decided that particular electrical work was beyond him, so we called in a professional who will soon be coming back out to connect to the breaker a brand new line that we ran from the attic to the basement in order to fix this problem appropriately.

OK, on to the pictures...

BEFORE

As you can see, there was a lot of fake wood, a lowered ceiling, and an ugly fan.

AFTER

The countertop here was also an ugly fake wood, so we painted and lacquered it.

And Paul's favorite...

Now if only we could afford to finish the floor....which first requires buying some new appliances for the kitchen and painting those walls. We are currently accepting donations.

Talk radio and Daylight Saving Time

First, DST.... I heard something funny on the radio this morning about people taking advantage of the extra hour of sunlight. I just sat here and thought, "Wow, I didn't know that by tricking our minds by changing every clock in the country by one hour we added an hour of sunlight to the days! What are we...God?"

I must admit that this is the first year that I have actually stopped to think about what we do with our clocks each spring and why. The conclusion I've come to is that it's silly and purely a mind-trick for people too lazy to change their sleep schedule. I really blame/thank the Army for my coming to this realization. I've gotten so used to getting up early with my husband that it irritates me to have to wait 2-3 (and sometimes 4) hours before businesses are open for me to get things done. Think about it. It's ridiculous. We don't need to change our clocks in order to maximize the daylight, we need to change the hours in which we do things. All changing the clocks does is convince our minds that it's later than it is! Instead of working from 9-5 during DST, try working 8-4 during standard time. IT'S THE SAME THING! And it's stupid. I don't blame the rest of the world for laughing at us for it.

Anyway, rant over. On to the next topic...

I'm not usually one to care for listening to radio talk shows or talk radio. I'm a huge fan of using the radio to listen to music. Especially when driving long distances, talk radio tends to put me to sleep, not keep me awake. I, however, have become quite addicted to The Glenn Beck Program, which airs for 3 full hours 6 days a week. He also has a nightly show on CNN Headline News, which we've never seen because we don't have cable, but man would I like to. He's witty, doesn't sugarcoat things, displays common sense and logic, and reports news stories that somehow get ignored (intentionally or not) by everyone else. It's good stuff and funny, too.

Another interesting person

Well, the hospital commander won't be joining us tonight, but made us promise to have them out some other time.

Paul informed me last night that he might invite out some of the other people he has met at the meeting/conference/whatever-it-is he's attending this week, which is perfectly fine. He told me about one of those people he really hopes will come down: a former head of the smokehouse at Hickory Park! Apparently, he's already gotten some tips on smoking meat from him. Like that they smoke their ribs for a minimum of 4 hours. Dems is yummy yummy ribs.

And for those who don't know (which, on this site, is probably no one), Hickory Park is one of my very favorite restaurants in my hometown. It also is where Paul and I went on our first date. And we both had ribs, which was probably against all those "first date rules," but I think it was just a foretaste of the rest of our life together (eating lots of yummy, wood smoked/grilled meat ). I'm excited for tonight.

Before I can get to the fun stuff...

...like more pictures from Japan or pictures of our beautifully redone dining room or pictures of our first time out geocaching...

...I need to clean the house because we've kinda got some big-wigs coming over for dinner tomorrow night. But they're cool big-wigs, who we already know and they're just colonels, not generals or anything. One, however, is Paul's boss' boss' boss (a.k.a. the top of the command without stepping out to a different area of the Army). And the other (assuming she and her family will make it) is the hospital commander (which Paul's office technically falls under, as well). We'll be cooking a signature Paul & Karly meal over the open wood flame.

So I'm going to use this as my to-do list and cross things off as I get them done, mostly just by room.
  • paint the air return vent cover for the dining room
  • master bedroom
  • upstairs bathroom
  • make a doctor appointment
  • call USBank
  • hallway & stairs
  • call Jones Electric
  • downstairs bathroom
  • kitchen
  • dining room
  • living room
  • den
  • laundry room
  • front porch
  • side deck
  • clean up some of the boxes in the shed (I think it might actually be calm enough to burn them, which would be awesome)
  • don't get sick (I think I'm failing at not catching the cold my wonderful husband is getting over )
Off I go!

While I get some stories and pictures put together...

Enjoy the video that I didn't manage to get posted a while back. It's amazing the things you don't expect to find in Okinawa, Japan:
